Look at the sentence "What is the third word." It's a statement, not a question, stating the the word "what" is the third word. But, there is no question asking you to determine the third word.
In the version where "language" is the answer, the riddle states "....there are three words in the English language." Separate it out, and you have "there are three words in (the English language)." The riddle asks you to indentify the third word in "the English langauge." So, the 3rd word is "language." Get it?

But I have to clarify by saying that the generally accepted answer to this "riddle" is the word "what." I just take exception to the fact that it does not ask you to solve anything. :-)
Yea I think High Cap got it, if you look at the riddle,
"Angry" and "hungry" are two words in the English language that end in "-gry". What is the third word. The word is something that everyone uses everyday. If you have read carefully, I have already told you what it is.
It says what is the third word, it could mean the third word in the riddle.
